What we run today
At the time of writing, The Personal Finance Report USA runs no display advertising. There are no ad network scripts on this site, no advertising cookies, and no retargeting pixels. If you are reading this and seeing an advertisement, it did not come from us.
We do accept paid editorial placements under the conditions in our Sponsored Content Policy. That is a different thing from display advertising and is always labelled.
This page describes the rules we will hold ourselves to if and when display advertising is introduced. We are publishing them before selling anything, rather than after.
Separation of advertising and editorial
Advertisers get no say in editorial. They do not see articles before publication, they cannot request changes, they cannot have a piece withdrawn, and buying space does not buy favourable coverage or protection from criticism. An advertiser who asks for any of that will be refused, and the relationship ended.
No article will ever be written because an advertiser wanted it. If a commercial relationship exists with a company we write about, it is disclosed on that article.
How ads would be marked
Any paid placement will be visually distinct from editorial content and labelled in plain language — “Advertisement” or “Sponsored” — in a size you can actually read. We will not use ad formats designed to be mistaken for articles, and we will not place ads inside the body of an article in a way that interrupts a sentence or a table.
What we will not accept
On a site about money, some categories do more harm than the revenue is worth. We will not accept advertising for payday or high-cost short-term lending, debt elimination or credit repair schemes that promise to remove accurate information from a credit file, advance-fee loans, cryptocurrency speculation or trading signal services, binary options, “get rich” or income-claim programmes, or anything promising guaranteed returns.
We will also refuse advertising that misrepresents a product’s cost, that hides material terms, or that targets people in financial distress with a solution that would make their position worse.
Reader data
We do not sell reader data to advertisers. If an ad network is introduced, the cookies it sets will be listed in our Cookies Policy before it goes live, not afterwards.
Complaints
If an advertisement on this site is misleading, inappropriate, or appears to be editorial, tell us at [email protected]. Advertising complaints are handled on the same basis as a correction: quickly, and in public where the error was public.
